Originally from the Midwest of the United States, Jonathon K. Stevens spent his formative years in San Diego, California. The ecological citizenship of Southern California, with its proximity to the ocean, mountains, and deserts, helped to define his strong respect for the natural environment. After earning a Bachelor of Architecture from Woodbury University, this reverence for the natural environment influenced the next twenty-five years of professional practice with many of Southern California’s accomplished architecture and design firms. While gaining a unique perspective and knowledge of specialized design and business approaches from sole proprietorships to mid-sized architecture and design-build firms, he learned the value of collaborative design approaches and the importance of including all voices in creating architecture and design. This combination of empathy and inclusion has also bolstered his interest and ability to work with community groups, direct project stakeholders, and development services departments to achieve local and nationally recognized projects. To immerse himself in a transforming view of architecture, Jonathon moved to Detroit, where he received a Master of Architecture degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Within this multidisciplinary program, he focused his research on cultural and social values, emphasizing the use and democratization of design. Following graduation, he developed an art and design practice that emphasizes being present, fosters sustainability, cultivates relationships, and facilitates cultural values. Over the following decade, these investigations continued to challenge the United States’ tentative, unsustainable relationship with the built environment. By occupying the space between art and architecture, Jonathon created site-specific, human-scaled objects that challenge the viewer’s perception of reality, prompting them to question what is seen and unseen. Presently, as a Licensed Architect, Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida A&M School of Architecture and Engineering Technology, community-appointed member of the Downtown Design Committee, NCARB Scholar, and academic leader, he aims to expand his practice to focus on community engagement, participatory design, and promoting architectural and urban design literacy. Furthermore, as an educator, mentor, and faculty advisor to three student groups at a nationally under-invested Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Jonathon is passionate about advocating for the inclusion of all voices in raising awareness about ecological and socio-cultural issues within the built environment.

Currently based in the Southeast United States. Practicing and Teaching at Florida A&M SAET.

Teaching is a mixture of inspiration and cultivation.
Design is a mixture of being present, interpretation, and experience.
By inspiring an equitable environment, an educator can facilitate each student’s search to find a way to interpret experiences.
