Gravity Structure 04 is a temporary, standalone structure that utilizes multiple tripod frames with elevated stabilizing felt containers. The frames interlock and rest on one another to form an adaptable, expandable structural system. CNC plasma-cut steel sheet metal brackets mechanically fasten each cedar post into a nested configuration that is infinitely repeatable. The elevated felt containers, once filled with local soil, stabilize the frames and allow the structural system to have a minimal impact on the local environment. The industrial natural felt was selected for its strength and biodegradability, while the nylon ropes were also introduced to symbolize reuse, facilitating the redistribution of the collected stabilizing local soil into the surrounding area.
This installation was my first large-scale structure to experiment with theories of integrating temporary and permanent objects. The placement and temporality of the gravity structure also sparked multiple conversations about materiality, craft, use, time, and who architecture is created for.
